For family-style Peruvian food, visit Hugo’s in Rahway, NJ.

Ceviche “Norteño”

From papas a la huancaina to ceviche, chaufas, and lomo saltado, Hugo’s Restaurant offers an extensive menu of Peruvian favorites. The cheese-pepper huancaina sauce is served on the side, so you can dip your papas (potatoes) or yuca. The ceviche Norteño, with red onion and a scramble of seaweed over lime-marinated white fish, is excellent. A single order of the beef, chicken, and shrimp fried rice (arroz chaufa especial) can feed four people. Large portions are the norm at Hugo’s.  Weekend specials include a goat stew and the creamy yellow pepper chicken stew – aji de gallina.

Arroz Chaufa

Hugo’s nautically-themed dining room is spacious, with about twenty tables. Plenty of room for the entire family. The restaurant occupies the back of a building facing Main Street. There’s a small outdoor deck and parking in the back.

Rahway is an emerging Union County hot spot for Peruvian fare, with two local restaurants worth visiting. Sabor Peruano on Irving Street across from the Union County Performing Arts Center is another option. Hugo’s is roomier. Both are serving satisfying Peruvian classics. Either would be an excellent place to root for Peru in the 2018 World Cup.
