The menu is simple and the food is excellent at Loaded Burgers-N-BBQ in Garwood, NJ.
Inside a deep yellow storefront on the corner of South Avenue and Center Street in Garwood, hometown of the writer Tom Perrotta, is one the best places in Union County, NJ for American burgers and BBQ sandwiches. You are unlikely to take home any leftovers.
Loaded’s menu offers plain burgers or cheese burgers; pulled pork, brisket and fried chicken sandwiches; a smoked chicken plate; and fries. From what we tried, you can’t go wrong. The all-natural beef burgers are excellent, cooked precisely to order, and served on a lightly toasted soft brioche bun. The burger size is just smaller than a typical pub-style burger. Even with toppings (bacon, avocado, mushroom, fried shallots, onions, caramelized onions) and cheese (7 choices) everything holds together nicely. Toppings are found underneath the cheese. Don’t be rube like me and ask, “Excuse me, I ordered onions?”
The blackboard pointedly offers no lettuce or tomato, since the owner believes these should never be served on a burger. I appreciate cooks with strong food opinions.
The brisket sandwich might be better than the burgers. Smoky layers of thinly crusted meat atop a brioche buns.
Try the spicy fries (with a hint of sweetness) alongside your sandwich. Pulled pork fries are a temptation I’m saving for my next visit.
