Mancinni’s serves excellent pizzas with fresh ingredients out of its coal-fired brick oven.

The “Classic” (with anchovies)

That’s a nice crust.

I had heard very good things about the pizza here since it opened last year. My son and I stopped in recently and we both agree: This tiny spot in Montclair is a must visit for brick oven pizza fans. The “Classic,” a Margherita pie with tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella and basil, arrived piping hot at our table with a nice char on the crust. The relatively thin crust was perfectly chewy, yet almost crispy enough to “fold and hold” a slice. Fresh toppings – we added anchovies – are flavorful. The tomato sauce is a touch watery for me, but overall an excellent version of the classic brick oven pizzas found in New Jersey and New York City.

There are six other pies, including Pancetta and Puttanesca, available in 12″ or 16″ versions (or a 10″ gluten free pie). Mancinni’s straightforward menu includes salads; fire-roasted vegetables; and prosciutto, sopresatta and vegetable sandwiches and plates.

The coal oven turning out this fresh food burns brightly at the back of the narrow space. There are only seven tables, so you may have to wait at peak hours. Stick it out. The pizza is worth it.
