Update

Picante has relocated from its original Morris Avenue location.

Review – July 2010

An informal 12 table storefront restaurant (263 Morris Avenue), Picante – “The Taste of Mexico” – serves decent Mexican fare. The Chilaquiles (tortilla strips in a red mole, with sour cream) are a very satisfying appetizer, the Chile Relleno is coated in egg, and the ┬átortillas appear to be homemade. Too bad each taco comes with only one tortilla, instead of two as in more traditional taquerias. None of the salsas we tried even approached “spicy” Mexican, so the restaurant’s name is a little misleading.

For wonderfully fresh and authentic food at a reasonable price, this is the place to go. The owner is very friendly and shares his knowledge and love of his homeland, Mexico. Try the flan at the end of your meal….delicious!

I like Picante very much both for the mom-and-pop charm — Lido has explained the Aztec calendar to my curious kid several times — and, in particular, for the guacamole. It’s not food processor guacamole, so it’s quite chunky, but there’s also an ingredient that I have yet to identify. Or maybe it’s not an ingredient but a more balanced proportion than I have mastered. The owner credits his big mortero. Maybe…
