The restaurant – eat in or take out – is in Hoboken. Check @TheTacoTruck on Twitter for the current location of the food truck in Hoboken and Jersey City.
I’m glad The Taco Truck opened a storefront in Hoboken. Now I know where to grab lunch on my way into the City between the New Jersey Transit and PATH trains. The sleek, metallic space on Newark Street, across from CVS and just around the corner from Carlo’s Bake Shop (the Cake Boss), captures Hoboken’s young professional vibe. There are a few small tables and some counter space in the tiny Store. It’s the food, though, that’s worth the detour.
The tacos – served on two soft, homemade corn tortillas with a choice of salsas – are solid. Carnitas Michoacan (sweet pork with onions and cilantro) are tangy and delicious. The menu includes tacos de barbacoa, chorizo con papas, pollo, al pastor, and hongos (mushrooms), each with a distinctive ingredient like lime-pickled onions or pineapple. For $ .75 extra, you can add guacamole and a sprinkle of queso fresco. The fish (pescado) taco, served as in Mexico on a flour tortilla, is nice and crispy with an addictive chipotle-tartar sauce. The Store also serves a soup, salads, tortas (sandwiches), soft drinks, including Mexican Coca-Cola (made with cane sugar instead of corn syrup), and a couple desserts.
It’s worth noting that The Taco Truck takes sustainability seriously. They source food from local farms and the restaurant is LEED-certified with environmentally-friendly materials and practices. As they say, “Eat More Tacos!”
