It looks like a run-of-the-mill Chinese takeout joint, but Calcutta Chinese is serving a very particular kind of food – Indo-Chinese.
A tiny spot in a strip mall with a few tables and a takeout counter, Calcutta Chinese is nothing fancy. At the extreme west end of Oak Tree Road and its many South Asian restaurants, many diners might drive right by. Calcutta Chinese is worth a visit, however, to sample the unique flavors of India’s “Hakka” cuisine.
There are pictures of some dishes above the counter, labelled with Chinese pictograms. The Calcutta Chinese menu includes standard Chinese fare like Egg Rolls, Wonton Soup, and Kung Pao Chicken, but it is the “Hakka” style dishes that stand out. “Hakka” is the Chinese ethnic group from Guangdong and Fujian provinces that settled the original Chinatowns of Calcutta, India. Indo-Chinese cuisine blends Chinese Hakka dishes with Indian ingredients and masalas.
Try the various Indian-spiced pakoras for an appetizer. Any item labeled Manchurian or Chili is a Hakka dish infused with masala, and a spice level to match. The Manchurian Cauliflower is an addictive, spicy vegetarian option. Manchurian fried rice brings Indian flavors to the classic Chinese version. The menu includes Manchurian Hot & Sour Soup, Cumin Lamb, Manchurian Beef and Hakka Lo Mein Noodles.
