Cebbellini, just 10 minutes from Newark Airport, is an unassuming local restaurant and bakery serving solid Peruvian fare.
Elizabeth is one of a growing number of Jersey locales with more than one choice for Peruvian food. Don Julio, on the waterfront near the container port, is our current favorite, but Cebbellini is also worth a visit. There is a small parking lot outside the restaurant on a commercial section of Newark Avenue, not far from Nugent’s Tavern in the North End.
Cebbellini’s menu includes Peruvian standards – ceviches, grilled meats, fried rice and noodle dishes, along with a few Italian pastas and chicken dishes. The eclectic selection of soups includes a Peruvian parihuela, a Colombian sancocho, a Salvadoran soap de res, and an Italian minestrone.
When we visited early on a Saturday evening, the dining room was surprisingly empty. A colorful mural along one wall overlooks about a half dozen tables. We enjoyed large portions of ceviche de pescado, fresh and spicy, and Peruvian-Chinese arroz chaufa (fried rice) with beef. Yuca a la huancaina features a thinner cheese sauce than other versions around New Jersey. Service is fast and friendly.
Freshly baked cookies and pastries, like sugar-dusted, dulce de leche-filled alfajores, are displayed near the entrance. Take a package home for dessert. They are very good.
