Put Destination Dogs in New Brunswick, NJ on your itinerary for hot dog styles from Jersey and beyond.

Chicago Dog @ Destination Dogs - New Brunswick, NJEthnicNJ’s social media guru, Debbie (aka Molotov-Cupcake), turned me on to this hot dog oasis in downtown New Brunswick. In the space that used to be Doll’s Place bar, under the train tracks next to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, the owners of Destination Dogs have successfully turned a passion for travel and sausage into a hip hot dog joint with multi-ethnic nods across the menu.

Outside @ Destination Dogs - New Brunswick, NJOrder by name or by airport code. “The Chicago Bull (ORD)” is a faithful interpretation of a classic Chicago dog, with a pickle spear, green relish, peppers and yellow mustard  (celery salt seemed to be missing). Jersey represents, of course, with an Italian hot dog, “The Nicky Newarker” (EWR), and a tribute to Rutgers University’s beloved grease trucks, the “Scarlet Bite” topped with cheese sauce, french fries, cabbage, tomato, pickle, mustard, mayo & ketchup. Global options include the “Charles Dog Gaulle” (CDG) with duck sausage, duck confit, shaved foie gras (OMG!), pickled mushrooms, cornichons & Dijon mustard; the “Le Poutine” (YMQ), a hot dog topped with fried potatoes, brown gravy, and cheese curds (or should it be the “Disco Fries” dog?); the “Choripan” (BUE), a chorizo with chimichuri; and the “Bun Mi” (HAN), pork sausage with shaved foie gras (OMG!), pickled vegetables, jalepenos, siracha mayo and cilantro. Honestly, I wanted to try almost every one. Your hot dog is served on a metal tray alongside homemade potato chips. Most hot dogs come on a nicely toasted, soft white bun. The tray is very helpful for catching overflowing toppings, so you can finish them off with your fingers.

Specialty Dog @ Destination Dogs - New Brunswick, NJWhat goes better with a hot dog than a cold beer? Destination Dogs has a very good selection on draft, and in cans, like SixPoint Sweet Action (one of my favorites). Next to the comfortable bar/dining room, a game room features foosball and pinball. As with Doll’s Place before it, however, Destination Dogs is far enough from campus to avoid being overwhelmed by the college-age drinking crowd.

Hot dog purists should start in Jersey at Rutt’s Hut or Hot Dog Johnny’s, but Destination Dogs is a worthy stop on any hot dog tour.
