El Matador, Bloomfield’s popular no frills spot for authentic Mexican food, has moved to Broad Street, where it continues to serve some of the best tacos in North Jersey.
Formerly wedged against the Parkway at 258 Montgomery Street, El Matador has brought it’s homestyle Mexican dishes to a location with much better parking.
Delicious, homemade soft corn tortillas are the foundation of the exceptional El Matador tacos. Fillings range from chicken, chorizo and al pastor (marinated pork), to shrimp, carne enchilada and short rib. A single order comes with three (!) tacos. Try the same filings on a huarache (oblong) or a sope (oval), grilled corn masa thicker than a tortilla, or for breakfast with huevos rancheros. Made fresh, particular fillings can run out. Chilaquiles (tortilla chips in tomatillo sauce), tostadas, cemitas (robust sandwiches on soft bread), tamales and quesadillas round out the menu. Ask about periodic specials.
The narrow, intensely colorful, storefront restaurant seats about 30 people. Service is super friendly, but timing can be haphazard when El Matador is full. Don’t worry, if you arrive hungry, you’ll leave satisfied.
Bloomfield, NJ is an excellent town for tacos. Just a mile and a half north on Broad Street is EthnicNJ favorite Taquería Auténtica.
