Eurogrill in Caldwell, NJ appears to be a traditional Portuguese BBQ spot. Look closer and you’ll find plenty of Brazilian dishes on the menu.
Portuguese BBQ restaurants are known for their grilled meats — whole chickens rotating over a barbecue pit, flaming chourico (sausage), and slabs of beef and pork ribs.
Eurogrill, which describes itself as a “traditional Portuguese wood burning barbecue,” makes all of these. The menu includes meat kebabs; seafood dishes (shrimp, cod, paella); and picadinho (pork cubes), with potatoes or an over the top mixed version with chicken, sausage, shrimp and clams.
Look carefully, however, and will also find some notably Brazilian dishes like a rodizio platter, Brazilian sausage and yuca, and feijoada, which is served on weekends. Eurogrill also serves an “X-Tudo” – a Brazilian-style burger with ham, cheese, bacon, corn kernels, a fried egg and, of course, potato sticks. It is a very good version that rivals the burgers at Hamburgão in Kearny and Newark. The large, deep fried Brazilian empanadas are another non-Portuguese item worth ordering.
The “Chicken Eurogrill”— grilled chicken in garlic sauce, with chorizo and hot peppers — is a nice Portuguese – Italian-American mash-up that reminds me of the “Chicken Murphy” (without the potatoes) on menus across New Jersey.
Eurogrill does a brisk take out business, but the dining room is large enough to dine in. The restaurant is worth a visit for hearty Brazilian and Portuguese fare.
