For some of the best Mexican food in South Jersey, head to Berlin.
That’s Berlin borough in Camden County, where Parilla La Nueva Fogata has been serving Mexican comfort food and Pueblan specialties since 2009.
The extensive menu includes burritos, enchiladas, huaraches (thick oblong masa “sandals”), and chilaquiles (tortillas in salsa) with all the traditional toppings. The chopped grilled meat fillings, like al pastor (marinated pork,) cecina (salt cured beef) and lengua (tongue), shine through in their tacos, served in two soft corn tortillas and adorned simply with chopped onion and cilantro. Add the homemade salsas carefully if you’re not used to Mexican spice levels – the green salsa is the hottest.
When my daughter and I visited for lunch on a recent Saturday, the torta she ordered was an impressively loaded sandwich with layers of spicy pork, refried beans, shredded farmer’s cheese, sliced pickled jalapeños, tomatoes, lettuce, and avocado on a soft roll.
There are plenty of meat and seafood entrees, from grilled steak to whole fried fish. Pueblan specialties include mole poblano, as well as the tripe stew (menudo) and the goat stew (birria) served on the weekends. Portions of everything are substantial, based on the plates we saw go by the table.
The large, colorfully decorated dining room accommodates about 40 tables, with an open view of the kitchen on one side. Flat screens broadcast Mexican television. Menus are available in both English and Spanish. Service is friendly and efficient.
