An unassuming strip mall in Washington Township, New Jersey, is where you’ll fiind the northenmost Vietnamese restaurant on the EthnicNJ map – Phở Miu.

Bánh Xèo

A small restaurant with about ten tables, Phở Miu serves classic Vietnamese dishes, like phở (rice noodle soup), bánh mì (French bread sandwiches)and bún (vermicelli noodles). The bánh xèo crepe I sampled here is excellent.

Beef phở is Daniel Ta’s specialty

Phở Miu’s owner, Daniel Ta, who hails from Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), named his first restaurant for his youngest daughter.

A self-taught cook, Daniel makes the food he grew up with, like beef phở, his most popular dish. He uses only fresh ingredients, no MSG paste, for the beef broth, which takes 12 hours to prepare.

Few of Daniel’s customers are Vietnamese, so he has adjusted his recipes to tone down some of the strongest Vietnamese flavors – like jalapeños on the bánh mì.

Phở Miu is worth a visit for straightforward Vietnamese fare in Bergen County.
