A rambling restaurant and pub in the Watchung mountains serving German food.
Rolf’s menu, beyond the standard bar fare, features a page of German specialties like Kartoffelpuffer (potato and onion pancakes), Jagerschnitzel (breaded pork cutlet with mushroom gravy), and Rouladen (braised stuffed beef). The German stuffed dumplings – knodel – were too heavy and doughy for my taste. The Weiner Scnitzel (breaded veal cutlet) and Sauerbraten (marinated beef) are decent, along with the spaetzle and red cabbage sides. Rolf’s one of the the few spots left serving German food in New Jersey, but not near the level of the Black Forest Inn‘s German cuisine.
The beer selection should be broader; there are only a few German brews available – Paulaner Lager, Paulaner Weissbier and Hacker Pschorr.
Rolf’s, a bit old and run down at the edges, has been around a while. Service is friendly and the beer is cold though. Sometimes, that’s worth a visit.
