Grab a bottle of wine and head to Skara Estiatorio for upscale Greek dishes in a lively dining room.
On a busy Friday evening, Caldwell’s Skara Estiatorio is hopping. It seemed like half the customers – a mix of young and old, families and couples – knew each other from around town. We didn’t have a reservation, but the welcoming host went out of his way to find us a table.
It was a good start to a very good meal. The appetizer special – a hefty plate of pork loin cubes with loukaniko sausage and jalapeños – could easily have been a main course. Grilled octopus arrived as a nicely charred, but not overcooked, tentacle. The kitchen grills its fish and meats over hardwood charcoal. (Skara is the word for the metal grill.) Appetizers on the menu include hummus, feta, eggplant and yogurt dips, and various hot items, like keftedes (beef patties), saganaki (pan-fried Kefalograviera cheese) and sautéed seafood.
Entrees include grilled whole fish and meats; braised short ribs in tomato sauce; and a traditional moussaka layered with potatoes, eggplant, zucchini and ground beef. The braised lamb shank, a dinner special the night we visited, is one of the best I’ve had – falling off the bone tender in a golden broth. Try the leek rice as a side.
Originally named Kefi Taverna when it opened in March 2014, Skara Estiatorio’s comfortable dining room features an azure tile mosaic along one wall. Service is excellent, friendly and efficient.
Add the excellent food and you won’t go wrong here. Skara is one of my favorite spots in New Jersey for upscale Greek cuisine.
