Spice is one of the tiniest Thai spots in Jersey, but well worth a visit for its oversized flavors and friendly service.
We sought out this well-reviewed restaurant on Belleville Avenue in Bloomfield, NJ for our daughter’s 17th birthday dinner.
We were lucky to snag a Thursday night reservation for eight people, including three teenage girls who were, let’s say, very talkative. There are only about eight tables total in Spice Thai Cuisine’s cozy, colorful dining room. (Apologies to the other diners for the volume of animated conversation at our table.)
The friendly servers were more than happy to make menu suggestions. There are curries, noodle dishes and a large selection of duck dishes. The fried appetizers we tried – coconut shrimp, curry puffs, spring rolls – were just ok. The entrees, on the other hand, were very good. The Yellow Curry with Dark Meat Chicken packs a lot of flavor. Flat Noodle Thai Basil, ordered “medium” spicy, is very spicy, as is the green curry.
Out of all the food, perhaps most memorable is one of the desserts, Bangkok Delight, a purple yam ice cream over luscious sweet sticky rice, which the owner brought to the table, unordered, for the birthday girl and her friends. It was delicious.
Parking is tricky near the corner location. Your best bet is the supermarket lot across the street.
