A tiny strip mall spot on Route 1 is serving solid Taiwanese food in Edison, NJ.
You might not notice Taiwan Tasty unless you’re looking for it. The narrow storefront restaurant resdies in a strip mall facing Route 1 South, just past the Old Post Road intersection, diagonally across from the Kam Man Asian food market. Chinese characters adorn most of the stores here. Taiwan Tasty is the last store on the left. (Look for the white “Chinese Food” sign in the window.)
Inside, there are only eight tables in the tidy dining room. The extensive menu features traditional Taiwanese specialties like Three Cup Chicken and Beef Noodle Soup, as well as many “street foods,” like a tasty beef and scallion wrap.
We visited on a late summer Saturday afternoon, snagging a table after the lunch crowd. The Taipei Juicy Bun, or soup dumplings, are very good. My daughter tried the Crispy Salt and Pepper Shrimp – true to its name, served heads on. My son, to my surprise, ordered a “Three Cup” sesame-soy tripe special, which was well prepared and savory (if you like the texture of tripe). We also sampled a very spicy, somewhat addictive, Popcorn Chicken – densely breaded and covered liberally with dried chillies and spice powder.
The friendly servers will happily make suggestions and explain any unfamiliar menu items. You can also see pictures of most items on the dining room walls.
After our meal, we cooled down the taste buds with milk and bubble teas to go from the Taiwanese-founded Gong Cha outlet six stores down.
