Hot Dogs

New Jersey is a hot dog hotbed.

Deep fried “rippers” from Rutt’s Hut in Clifton of Hiram’s in Fort Lee, Paterson-style Texas Weiners, and the Italian hot dog, a Newark creation, loaded with potatoes, peppers and onions are uniquely Jersey foods, and must be part of any serious debate about the best hot dogs in the country.  I’m partial to deep fried dogs with serious “snap,” and simple toppings: mustard and kraut or spicy relish.

Congrats on your anniversary. You’re on the EthnicNJ map. I do hope to try your dogs soon.

  2. Linda says:

Have you tried Jack’s Franks & Fries on Rt. 22 in Union?

We just had our 1 year anniversary and in July we’re introducing Kobe-style 5.3 lb hot dogs…we’ve got homemade chili and cole slaws – and daily specials.

Come in and let us know what you think!

  3. Ken Ashe says:

Reading this is making my hungry. I think I’ll hit Jimmy Buff in Scotch Plains for dinner tonight!

  4. Frank says:

No. It’s a tiny place on rt 28 (north Avenue) in dunellen.
ps – great breakfast sandwiches too.

  5. Anthony says:

Sounds good. Is it on Route 22?

  6. Frank says:

The best hot dog joint in my area is J&G Texas Weiners in Dunellen. 2 up, a fry, and a large birch beer. Definitely a favorite guilty pleasure. Best texas weiners ever.

  7. Anthony says:

Southside is on my list of places to try for cheesesteaks – https://ethnicnj.com/food/american/burgers/

I’ll have to check it out for Italian Dogs too.

(BTW – If you are connected to the restaurant, please say so in your comments.)

    Thanks,

    Anthony

I moved from West Orange NJ to Spotswood and was deprived of a good Italian Hotdog for a long time. Every italian hotdog (and other sandwich) around here involves using store bought french fries on a sub roll. Finally I found a place worth going to that is only 15 minutes away, Southside in Old Bridge on rt34.

Sandwich comes on pizza bread, stuffed with cut potatos (NOT FRENCH FRIES!)
