I’ve been wanting to try this place for a while. From the outside, Bella Italia looks like a classic Jersey red sauce joint. (more…)
On a hot Independence Day afternoon, my wife and I found ourselves at Montclair’s longstanding watering hole for a quick bite. We entered the first floor bar and walked into an impromptu Pipes and Drums performance that was underway, at full volume. The Gaelic group had marched earlier in the Montclair Fourth of July Parade. An auspicious start for our first visit to the all-American Irish bar known for its friendly barkeeps and highly-regarded burgers.
A very good cheeseburger
With the bagpipe version of “You’re a Grand Old Flag” ringing in our ears, we ordered burgers – one plain, one with cheese – and onion rings. The burgers were exactly medium-rare, as ordered, served on soft bun a little too big for the patty. My wife declared the onion rings among the best she’s had. We were hungry, but Tierney’s clearly serves above average bar fare, and a pub-style burger worth a visit. The simple menu includes grilled items, sandwiches (Taylor Ham!) and sides. Not an Irish dish to be found, except for the beer, which includes Guinness and Rolling Rock on tap.
The wrap-around wooden oval bar and well-worn wood floor have been serving locals since 1934.
