A Virginia based chain launched in 2005, there are two Elevation Burger franchises in New Jersey so far (Montclair and Moorestown). The organic, grass-fed, free-range beef burgers, “ground on the premises,” do taste good, but they are a little small for a non-slider. The cheese is real cheddar and available toppings include carmelized onions, balsamic mustard and hot pepper relish. The fries were too thin and a little soggy. Other than burgers, there’s a salad and a gilled cheese sandwich on the menu. Elevation also serves chocolate, vanilla or coffee shakes.
The restaurant is fast food style with roomy seating, a light blue color scheme, and sort of a Jamie Oliver meets the Jetsons vibe.
In the “specialty chain” category, I give the nod to 25 Burgers, Bobby’s Burger Palace and Five Guys over Elevation. My 11 year old son, though, likes the Elevation cheeseburger better than Five Guys.
An old school Newark institution known for their Italian hot dogs. They deep fry the dogs and fill the soft italian bread wedge with mustard, grilled onions and peppers, one or two dogs (or one hot dog plus one Italian sausage – the “combo”), fried potatoes and ketchup. The corner shop has six tables with rigid plastic seats for about 20. Dickie Dee’s also sells pizza (nothing special), sandwiches and subs. RC Cola on tap.

There are two locations of this fantastic Brazilian sandwich shop in New Jersey: one in Newark and one in Kearny (review).
