An excellent Sandwich Cubano – ham, roast pork, swiss cheese, pickle, yellow mustard and good cuban bread – precisely prepared at the counter, then grilled in a sandwich press. I washed it down with a Batido de Mango (Mango shake). Next time I’ll try the cafe con leche, and maybe a steak sandwich or one of the Cuban main dishes.

Make sure you’re hungry when you arrive at Oh! Calamares. The portions are huge. We barely put a dent in the mountain of arroz chaufa (Peruvian fried rice). Start with the Choritos a la Chalaca (New Zealand mussels topped with vinegar-marinated onions and Peruvian large-kernel corn) or any of the ceviches. There is a good version of fried yuca with Huancaina sauce. I had the Picante de Mariscos, a delicious bowl of shellfish in a yellow chili pepper cream sauce.
Oh! Calamares is a festive neighborhood spot with a full bar. Friendly service in both English and Spanish. We went with the kids on a Friday night around 7 pm without a reservation and got a table right away. By the time we left, there was a wait and some musicians were setting up for live music.

Made a special trip to check out Pete Genovese‘s best Margherita pizza in Jersey. La Rustique Pizzeria, attached to Cafe La Rustique, cooks up brick oven pizza for takeout from an entrance around the corner (5th Street). Ordered one pie to go after my son’s fencing tournament in Jersey City the other day. Excellent crust (even out of the box and re-heated in the oven), fresh mozarella and an outstanding sauce with just the right acid-sweet balance. Have to try the Cafe food next time. But how could you come here and not order the pizza?
