This cozy spot close to the Red Mill on the South Branch of the Raritan River in scenic Clinton serves up a hearty breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Sunday. On a recent visit for lunch, we enjoyed the solid sandwiches and salads, though nothing we tried (Pulled Pork, Ham and Brie, Chicken Salad) was strongly seasoned. I want to try their breakfast, which many others rave about. It doesn’t look like a traditional diner, the decor is more country eclectic than art deco, and the menu is only a few pages, but The Fine Diner is by far the friendliest Jersey diner I’ve visited in a long time. Everyone who walks through the door is greeted, and treated, like a regular.

The atmosphere is perfect at this roadside tavern just off Route 78 West. A large wrap-around bar, wooden booths against the walls, television screens visible from many angles, and lots of those beer-branded mirrors you can win on the boardwalk down the shore. There’s also a pool table and a pinball machine.
Many people love the thin-crust pizza at Miller’s Tavern. I wanted to, but I didn’t. The crust was just OK, not much flavor, and it failed my fold test – the toppings were too heavy and wet.
Miller’s is still worth a visit for it’s standard bar fare including burgers and a raw bar. And if you’re headed west to PA on 78, stop at Miller’s for real pizza before you find yourself in a land of pizza nightmares with toppings like cheddar cheese and pineapple.
