De Lorenzo’s Tomato Pies

Review  (Sep 2009)

The original De Lorenzo’s has served up “tomato pies” on Hudson Street in Trenton since 1947. Because of the name, I was scared these pies would be Chicago-style deep dish – not real pizza. I haven’t made it to the Trenton original yet, but the pizza at the Robbinsville branch is excellent. (Yes, a tomato pie is pizza by any other name.) Besides an antipasti and a couple of salads, only pizza on the menu. No strange toppings either. I had a small pie with roasted peppers and sausage. The crust was nicely charred and flavorful. A little too thin at the edges, but still foldable with some flop. Fresh sauce and cheese. The sausage is decent.

This suburban outpost in the Washington Town Center shopping center opened in 2008. Comfortable restaurant with over a dozen tables, booths and an open kitchen featuring the pizza oven.
