Bobby’s Burger Palace

February 4, 2011

We visited Bobby’s Burger Palace, across the parking lot from the Monmouth Mall, in 2009 a few months after it opened. The burgers were very good – thick enough to have some juice in the middle and compact relative to the bun. There are regionally-themed topping combinations (Philadelphia: provolone, griddled onions, hot peppers; Santa Fe: queso sauce, pickled jalapenos, blue corn chips) with fresh ingredients. You can “crunchify” any burger with potato chips. Sauces on the counter include jalapeno and a wonderful chipotle ketchup. The onion rings stand out. The fries are solid. Thick shakes go well with the burgers.

To eat in, you have to order and pay at the register, then find a seat at the long counter that snakes through the restaurant. Your order is delivered to you after you are seated. Finding seats together for a group can be difficult if the place is busy, and you may be sitting with strangers.

Bahia De Acapulco

October 4, 2010

After taking the kids to Great Adventure for the day, we were on Route 9 North trying to avoid Turnpike traffic, and stopped in Freehold for dinner. I knew there could be some seriously good ethnic food in Bruce Springsteen‘s hometown when we walked past a Mexican grocery and then a Mexican music store with lucha libre masks in the window. Not only is there a cluster of Mexican restaurants, but there are regional Mexican places.

Bahia De Acapulco, a bare-bones storefront, serves excellent burritos and authentic tacos. The menu features lot’s of Acapulco-style fish dishes that I want to try next time. English is the second language here, so Spanish comes in very handy.
